Locally Applied Antibiotics

A Powerful Boost to Healing — Right Where It’s Needed Most

At Tidelands Dental, our goal with periodontal care isn’t just to clean — it’s to heal, restore, and protect your gums long term. For patients with moderate to advanced gum disease, we often recommend locally applied antibiotics as part of a comprehensive treatment plan.

These antibiotics are placed directly into the infected gum pockets to kill bacteria and support healing — delivering more powerful, targeted results than brushing or rinsing alone.

What Are Locally Applied Antibiotics

What Are Locally Applied Antibiotics

Locally applied antibiotics are medications placed directly into periodontal pockets (the spaces between your teeth and gums) after scaling and root planing or during periodontal maintenance.

When Are Local Antibiotics Recommended

You have deep pockets that remain after scaling and root planing

You show signs of reinfection or persistent inflammation

You are unable to take systemic antibiotics

You’re undergoing periodontal maintenance for chronic gum disease

How the Treatment Works

Assessment

During your cleaning or maintenance visit, we’ll measure your gum pockets and identify areas of concern.

Placement

The antibiotic is gently placed into the pocket using a small applicator — no needles, no cutting.

Activation & Absorption

The medication slowly releases over 5–7 days, killing harmful bacteria where toothbrushes and rinses can’t reach.

Follow-Up

At your next visit, we’ll reassess pocket depth and gum response to see if further treatment is needed.
